Gamma—Ray Counters to Monitor Radioactive Waste Packages in the MICADO Project

نویسندگان

چکیده

One of the goals MICADO Euratom project is to monitor gamma-rays emitted by radioactive waste drums in storage sites on a medium long term basis. For this purpose, 36 low-cost gamma-ray counters were designed and built act as demonstrator. These counters, named SciFi, are based scintillating fiber readout at each end silicon photomultiplier, assembled robust arrangement form 80 cm pipes. Several will be placed around radwaste packages order gamma dose-rate collecting continuous data stream. The sensors thoroughly tested with 22Na 137Cs sources, an AmBe neutron source, results quite satisfactory, next step test real environment.

Cements in Radioactive Waste Disposal

The use of cement and concrete to immobilise radioactive waste is complicated by the wideranging nature of inorganic cementing agents available as well as the range of service environments in which cement is used and the different functions expected of cement. For example, Portland cement based concretes are widely used as structural materials for construction of vaults and tunnels. These const...

Practical Solutions to Radioactive Waste Characterization

The movement or storage of containers of radioactive waste requires characterization of the contents for radioactivity to verify conformance with transportation and waste acceptance controls. Spectroscopy of the emitted gamma rays is often the only viable method of assay of the contents. The spectrum analysis must include suitable efficiency, attenuation and geometry corrections for bulk contai...

Disposal of Radioactive Waste

Perhaps the most important single problem arising from the increasing use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes is how to dispose of the growing amounts of radioactive waste. Many of its complex aspects were discussed at the scientific conference on the disposal of radioactive waste held by IAEA in Monaco from 16 to 21 November 1959. The conference was organized jointly with UNESCO, with the c...
